The partitions around and within this beautiful walled garden are integral to its design; our gates decorate and soften those boundaries

Our brief encompassed four bespoke oak gates; each of the gates had its own character, and the purpose of the gates varied in each case. Within the external cob wall, a full height gate was needed with a barrier like presence, but allowing a glimpse through into the garden.

Two further gates which were to be set in walls within the garden needed to be similar, but one needing to restrict a view through from the kitchen, whilst the other needing to allow a view through from the family room. The fourth gate was to be half height and hung on posts, set within a yew hedge with a more ornamental character.

Our design and production processes helped take these gates from outline ideas into beautifully hand crafted bespoke oak gates

Each of these gates is deeply personal to the client. Jack Badger worked alongside the principle garden designer, starting with an overall brief on each gate and a design collage. We developed the designs based on our experience of gate design and construction, ensuring the gates not only looked beautiful but would also have the longevity we strive for.

Our initial concept, using a pierced carving on the cob wall gate, earned the trust of the team, so we were able to contribute more into the design process as each subsequent gate was developed, drawing on our hand carving expertise to produce softer and more decorative designs.

The Wiltshire farmhouse gates will age gracefully and decorate this beautiful walled garden for decades to come

Jack Badger’s approach to design helped bring this project together and resulted with the client’s expectations being exceeded. We took loosely formed ideas, developed them with our knack for the right architectural joinery aesthetic, and built in longevity with our traditional joinery know-how.

Each gate has it’s own character but as a collective, these gates work together using a common language in the material and the use of delicate hand carving; perfectly dressing the partitions in and around this beautiful walled garden.
